Session 1: Income Tax Planning for Special Needs Families: Medical Expense Deductions, Credits, and Financing Strategies with Thomas M. Brinker
This session will focus on maximizing income tax deductions and credits for families caring for individuals with special needs. We will explore items deductible from adjusted gross income (AGI) to determine taxable income, specifically emphasizing the expanded medical expense rules. Participants will gain insights into managing timing issues and addressing unique considerations for itemized deductions and expanded credits introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and other recent legislation. Additionally, the session will examine financing strategies related to medical expense deductions, such as the use of retirement plan distributions and home equity loans, and the implications of the tax benefit rule. We will also explore the interaction between medical expense and home equity deductions, offering practical tax planning solutions for professionals working with special needs families.
Session 2: Protecting Clients & Their Families from the Cost of Long-Term Care, with a focus on the difference between IRC 7702b (life insurance with accelerated death benefit for chronic illness riders) and IRC 101g (life insurance with long-term care benefits including asset-based long term care insurance), and why it matters with Don Quante.
